Blairstown Elementary School Installs Rain Garden

In conjunction with the Musconetcong Watershed and Rutgers University, Blairstown Elementary School is pleased to announce the installation of a rain garden. The purpose of the rain garden is to absorb, hold, and filter the runoff water from the roof of the gym. Rain gardens are great for the environment as they naturally manage excess water and reduce the amount of sitting water which, in turn, helps control the mosquito population. The BES Rain Garden is located on the side of the building along Stillwater Road. This project would not be possible without the help of the Musconetcong Watershed Ambassador, Ryan Jiorle, the Program Associate of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program, Hollie DiMuro, and the BES Green Team led by Dr. Susie Elias. We would also like to give a special thanks to Agens Stone for donating materials and David Quick for digging up the space. It is our hopes that the rain garden is a learning opportunity for our students as they discover ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
