Problem Solving

Everyday Mathematics emphasizes the application of mathematics to real world situations. The program follows a problem-solving approach so skills such as adding with regrouping or time, for example, are not taught in isolation for only a few weeks, to be forgotten later.  Numbers, skills and mathematical concepts are linked to situations and contexts that are relevant to everyday 3rd grade lives. The curriculum also provides numerous suggestions for incorporating mathematics into daily classroom routines and other subject areas.  Perhaps the 3rd graders are excited about a watermelon spitting contest.  Well, we could use everyday math to measure the distance of our seeds on a warm Spring day.  We could also measure the perimeter of real-life places such as our playground or classroom.  Together, we problem-solve to make math more real.
