MATH CLASS- A typical math class follows this basic structure:
- Mental Math and Reflexes-warm up with basic facts. This strengthens number sense and reviews basic skills.
- Math Message-Usually leads into the day’s lesson. Students usually answer on individual white boards or in marble notebooks, share with their peers, then as a whole group. Example on the board.
- Review Home Link-I will check that the homework is done and give a grade for completion. We will go over any questions the students might have. Please take the time to help or review the assignment at home. Homework is assigned Monday - Thursday and is due the following day unless otherwise noted on the actual homework page or in your child’s planner. If homework becomes too frustrating on any particular assignment, please allow your child to stop, and sign your name next to that problem. That way, I will know that your child attempted to complete the work, but was unable to rather than not having the time to finish the assignment, or forgetting to try the work. I don’t mind spending extra time re-teaching a concept in class or helping a child one-on-one at recess when needed.
- Lesson-The first part of the lesson is when the concept is introduced. We will use many of the manipulatives and tools found in our kits. The Student Journal is also included in the lesson. During the second part, we will play games; do journal assignments, enrichment, and other activities.
- I usually end the class with some type of math game (Around the World, The Chain Game, Card Game, etc). I feel that these promote a love of math as well as reinforce the basics.
