Language Arts in 3rd Grade

In 2007, B.E.S. adapted a new Language Arts program for grades 3-6 called 6 + 1 Traits of Writing.  This program reinforces creative writing by including many ways to introduce or work on skills such as IDEAS, ORGANIZATION, VOICE, WORD CHOICE, FLUENCY, CONVENTIONS, and PRESENTATION.  In 3rd grade, we will study one trait each month until we are working on them all consistently in our personal writing.

We will write Personal Narratives, Descriptive Paragraphs, How To Stories, Picture Prompt Compositions, many forms of Poetry, Persuasive letters, and much more during our 180 days in 3rd grade!

On most days, your child will complete a DOL assignment, or Daily Oral Language, which means he/she will rewrite 2-3 sentences from the overhead or the chalkboard onto lined paper, and fix some mistakes in them.  This is practiced often so that children learn editing skills and look for mistakes more readily.

I also have my class do a variety of forms of writing throughout each school day.  For example, on any given day, we’ll take notes, create charts, graphic organizers, concoct silly sentences or stories, write skits to teach others, make up student quizzes together, and even more!  We always think of ways that make writing more enjoyable for all!
