GRADING – The following items are figured into
your child’s reading class grade:
a. Classwork – during the 1st marking period, the teacher will only deduct one point for each missing ending mark or capitalization mistake. During the 2nd – 4th marking periods, the student will lose half credit, as sentence structure must be secure if one wants to be clear in his/her writing.
b. Homework – We will always check our reading homework. Sometimes your child will be asked to correct each problem himself and other times a teacher will collect it after discussing it, and grade it. If homework doesn’t come back from a student, he/she will complete it during recess, unless a note with good reason arrives from the parent or guardian.
c. Vocabulary Sentences, Personal Stories, Quizzes, Tests – We use vocabulary terms in context with our literature, act them out whenever possible, and try to use them in our own words, usually in definitions and sentences. Before most quizzes or tests, you will see reading homework based specifically on studying vocabulary in your child’s planner.
d. Book Reports and Book Review worksheets – We will complete one book report and one book review worksheet each marking period, which will mostly be completed at home. Both Book Report and Book Review book choices must be shared with me prior to reading them for this type of assignment. Specific directions will be sent home with a signature slip so that I know both the child and parents understand the directions for these projects. Likewise, your child will have 3-4 weeks to complete these assignments.
