Friday, November 16th - SCHOOL CLOSED

Due to the inclement weather, Blairstown Elementary will be CLOSED today.

BES Families,

Today, while school was in session, a fire alarm was accidently pulled causing everyone to evacuate the building.  Administration quickly assessed that it was an accident and deemed the building safe in consultation with law enforcement and fire personnel.  Students were diverted to the gym where administration praised the students for following protocol and having appropriate behavior.  At no time was anyone in any danger or at risk.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact our office and we will always be glad to help.

Thank you!

Thisbus accident morning at approximately 8:30, one of our buses, the Mouse bus, was in a minor traffic accident at the traffic light on Rt. 94 near Ace Hardware.  A small vehicle hit the back of the bus while the bus was stopped at the traffic light.  All children were safe and no one was injured.  Police and a School Administrator were immediately on the scene.  After assessing the situation, the police deemed the bus drivable.  The children were driven to the school with an administrator on board.  All children arrived at school safely.

Important Parent Information

In light of the current events involving people dressing as clowns with the sole purpose of causing public fear, we are working with the Blairstown PD and support their efforts on this growing concern.  Our first and foremost priority is the safety and security of our children. (We strongly suggest any parent/guardian planning on attending our Halloween Parade to refrain from wearing a clown costume or wearing a face mask of any kind.)  More information and guidelines regarding our Halloween parade will be forthcoming.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call our office!

TUESDAY, DEC 7 - WEDNESDAY, DEC 16

Blairstown Elementary School 1st grade classes, Student Council and Fitness Empire have teamed up with the Marines!

If your family would like to participate in the local Marines Toys for Tots campaign, 1st grade will be putting a donation box in the Schaare Wing. There will be an additional box at Fitness Empire.

We would love to help teach our children about the gift of helping less fortunate families through this service learning project.  When a child brings in a new and unwrapped gift to donate, they are able to place it in the box and watch the donations grow.  By actually seeing their contributions and know where they are going, the children get an extra special feeling of helping their local community.

We will start collecting new, unwrapped toys on Tuesday, 12/7. The deadline for donations is Wednesday, December 16th, 2015 in order for us to be able to give the gifts to the Marines for distribution.

Quality Single Accountability Continuum (QSAC)

QSAC is the New Jersey Department of Education’s monitoring and evaluation system for public school districts.  It is a single comprehensive accountability system that consolidates and incorporates the monitoring requirements of applicable state laws and programs and complements federally required improvements.  The system focuses on monitoring and evaluating school districts in five key components that, based on research, have been identified to be key factors in effective school districts, and takes place every three years.

As you may already know, Blairstown Elementary School has been designated as a “high performing district.”  Because we have satisfied the eligibility requirements, and have met the required number of QSAC indicators in each of the five mandated QSAC areas, we are able to apply for and receive a waiver of the full regulatory process with an equivalency application.  We have already informed our Board of Education, district professional staff, and, most recently, the Blairstown PTG.

We are greatly pleased to be eligible for this equivalency and to be designated as “High Performing” and will continue to strive to deliver the best possible instruction for all our young learners.

Dentist Coming to BES on December 11th

Our school has arranged for a dentist to come right to the school. By seeing the in-school dentist you can keep your child healthy, stay on top of their attendance and keep up with their learning. Cleaning, X-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants are offered. It’s easy and convenient for you! Simply fill out the permission form, which will be sent home next week and return it to the school with your child. Call Mrs. Hamilton at 362-6111 option 4 with any questions.

A Special Safety Tip of the month from the Principal

It's that time of year when we are pulled in so many directions; with shopping, decorating, concerts, and just everyday life.  Please remember that we do not lose focus on the safety of our children, as we partner with you to do the same.  Reinforce with your children the lesson of  ‘stranger danger’ and how important it is not to talk to or go with anyone they do not know.  They should not become complacent during this magical time of year, as most of us trust in the greater good of man, there are certain dangers out there that our children must remain aware of.

During this Holiday Season, let us pause and reflect on all that we have to be grateful for ... family, friends, our health, and the wonderful extended family we have here with each other.

We wish you and yours a truly Happy and Safe Holiday Season.

School Board Recognition Month

school board recognitiionNew Jersey’s local boards of education play an essential role in our students’ lives. They oversee 581 school districts which, in turn, operate 2,500 public schools and provide educational services to nearly 1.4 million children. They set the policies for our schools and make important decisions affecting curriculum, financing and staffing.

January 2018 is the annual School Board Recognition Month in New Jersey, a time to raise public awareness of the roles and responsibilities of local boards of education and to thank your community’s school board members for their efforts.

 HELPS HOMELESS VETERANS

A check of $1,100.00 was given to “Operation Chillout”, which is an all-volunteer not-for-profit homeless veteran’s outreach program.  Their purpose is to help veterans in need and to end homelessness in the general public.

This year the organization is building a Tiny House for a Warren County veteran.  The money will be used to purchase a television and to help pay for the heating/AC unit in the house.

The project was sponsored by Blairstown’s Student Council.  They created posters and collected the donations. In addition, the entire school was involved in making cards thanking the veterans for their service.  Warm hats were given to the veterans, as well. Staff members were involved by holding a “Dress-Casual” Day and donated the money for this project.

If you would like any further information about this project please go to www.operationchillout.org.
